Actinorhizal root nodules are nitrogen-fixing symbioses between the actinomycete Frankia and roots of dicotyledonous plants belonging to 25 genera from eight different plant families (Table 1).

Root nodules fix nitrogen. Alnus serrulata is very similar in appearance to Alnus incana subsp. rugosa. Genus name is the Latin name for alder. Specific epithet is in reference to serrulate leaf margins. Alder establishment via seed is not assured, however, as drought and heat injury, pathogens, animals and other factors often destroy seedlings. Alder has nitrogen-fixing nodules on its roots that directly and indirectly increase nitrogen in forest ecosystems.

rugosa nodules prepared, 42 yielded isolates. Asimple mediumcontaining mineral salts, CasaminoAcids, andsodium pyruvate proved to be the most effective for isolation. In general, colonies appeared 6to 20days after inoculation. 2021-2-6 · Although most plants able to form nitrogen-fixing root nodules are in the legume family Fabaceae, there are a few exceptions: . Parasponia, a tropical genus in the Cannabaceae also able to interact with rhizobia and form nitrogen-fixing nodules; Actinorhizal plants such as alder and bayberry, can also form nitrogen-fixing nodules, thanks to a symbiotic association with Frankia bacteria.

The nodules are peren-nial and increase in size each year, eventually becoming over an inch in diameter. In some plants, such as alder, the individual lobes that make up the nodule are very tight and compact. In others, such as sweet fern, each lobe of nodule grows out into an upwardly growmg root creating a sort of witch’s broom effect. These nodules
